"You really should tan and dye."
Welcome to iZombie season 3 recaps, which I hope to update more regularly. But episode two is airing tonight and I'm just writing the season premiere, so don't get your hopes up.
Season Three in the adventures of our favorite zombie involves a new frenemy(?), Clive actually being let into the loop, and Roomie Peyton making bad decisions,
We start the new season 2.8 minutes after the S2 finale, which makes me laugh more than it should. Our new friend Vivian Stoll (who told Liv last season that Seattle would be "capital of the zombie homeland) blows up the Max Rager building (good riddance) to basically make most of season 2 a moot point. Through the course of the episode, we find out that her government contract firm (Fillmore Graves - yes, I missed it on first viewing) is basically all zombies due to the aftereffects of some chemical weapons, combined with Ms. Stoll herself voluntarily becoming a zombie after her husband is infected.
Fillmore Graves (how did I miss that?) is training zombies for d-day - discovery day. Ms. Stoll has no confidence that humans will be accepting when they find out zombies exist. But instead of fighting back, her team says they are planning for a sanctuary island, where zombies can live peacefully away from humans. No mention of how they'll get their food supply, though she is already connected to a network of mortuaries that seem to be supplying the company.
Vivian is happy to share this with our team. She also introduces them to the kid zombies they're educating, and of course Detective Clive knows one because he needs another in to emotionally connect with zombies after seeing last season's massacre. Hopefully you didn't get too attached to the adorable kid, because let's just say we're probably not going to see them in future episodes, no matter how much time we spend at the compound.
I totally forgot Mr. Boss kidnapped Roomie Peyton to draw out Zombie Uncle Snark Daddy, who may or may not have amnesia. And really, Ravi and Peyton - you are better than this story line. Which is why I'm not giving it any more coverage.
At the beginning of the ep, our core five (Liv, Major, Roomie Peyton, Detective Clive, and Ravi) regroup and agree not to keep any more secrets from each other. Sweet - let's see if it lasts.
This episode felt a little filler-y to me in general, but the last ten minutes or so were anything but. As mentioned earlier, the kid Detective Clive knew ended up dead, along with his parents, in part because a conspiracy radio host uncovered the "true" story of the Max Rager incident. Clive recused himself from the case, but made a vow with Liv and Ravi to pursue the culprit on their own time.
Honestly, once I figured out the kid was killed, I assumed it was Fillmore Graves (STOP) because of the connection with Clive, who was the only human around and was pretty openly concerned about the threat of an army of zombies. But Stoll's reaction to the news (when she was alone), and sharing it with the kids made me think she might be genuine. Which might make her even more interesting.
We end with Livvie visiting a (seemingly) devastated Vivian Stoll (presumably to sign up), and seeing Major has joined the Fillmore Graves trainees.
Oh, and Ravi's old boss who fired him from the CDC for thinking zombies exist is checking out the Max Rager aftermath. Not sure how I feel about that.
And finally, a bunch of stuff about whether or not Blaine and/or Major may or may not die if Ravi doesn't figure out the cure. Not the most interesting parts of the ep.
Oh, and Don E. defrosts Blaine's dad. That will probably come up again.
Notes and Quotes:
* Liv: And she knew I was one [zombie]
Ravi: Well you don't do much to hide it.
* Clive: A zombie homeland.
Liv: People aren't going to want to see that happen.
Major: Yeah, I can see a few closed-minded people objecting,
* Marching Fillmore Graves soldiers: "You can’t kill me I can’t die unless you shoot me in the eye."
My iZ watching friend: "Maybe don't tell them exactly how to kill you?"
* So, Blaine killed Vivian's husband, right? Was there any other interpretation of someone extorting him for brains then killing him?
* Next week (fine - tonight) looks like lots of fun with Livvie being overprotective dad and Major oversensitive teen
